RIDER INFORMATION - SPECTATOR INFORMATION
With results coming through from various Hill Climb Competitions around the UK today (Oct 7th) the ‘sharp’ end of the field at the Bec C C event next weekend (14th Oct) looks set to become a close fought battle of hill climbing abilities.... Last man off from the 109 entrant field, which s a record entry for the Bec, will be Reigning National Hill Climb Champion Gunnar Gronlund....
Gunnar will be making his debut appearance at this the 57th edition of the Bec CC 700yard mainly 1 in 6 event, and on paper some would argue he is a clear favourite to take the 1st Prize of a SHARP 60inch flat screen TV..
But after Arctic SRAM rider Rob Gough’s outstanding 3 out of 3 Hill Climb wins this weekend, and Wheelbase.co.uk/MGD’s rider Jack Pullar taking some serious Hill Climbing scalps in winning the Prestigious Monsal Hill Climb today, it is clear that Groenlund is not going to have an easy ride to take the honours...
Throw Endura Racings Ian Bibby into the equation of the Bec start list for the Individual rankings become pretty hot, along with several other very capable riders such as Raleighs Holohan, Holmes & Townshend and Team Corley Cycles evergreen Hill Climbing Team of Cartland, Stone & Jones chasing the substantial team prize of 3 x 32” flat screen TV’s again supplied by SHARP the Bec Hill Climb is going to witness some fantastic racing.....
Many of this years Competitors might be breathing a sigh of relief to see that young Germaine Burton ‘Team De Ver’ winner of the last two editions of the Bec CC event has not thrown his hat into the ring to defend his title.. Germaine had a long telephone chat with Bec Organiser Garry Beckett about possiby not entering this year as he had a chance to attend the ODP (Olympic Development Plan) training Camp and possibly get selection for the Development GB Team... “Obviously the bigger picture for such a young & talented rider had to take priority over our Hill Climb” said Beckett, “but hopefully Germaine will back in future years to try & take back his crown” We at the Bec CC wish him all the best...
Other Categories eligible to take advantage of the Bec CC’s substantial Prize list which value totals at just over £5,000 and has been very generously supported by Garmin UK alongside our other sponsors Rouleur, Sharman Building Services & Team Garmin Sharp Barracuda’s Chiro Matt Rabin partner of ‘The Performance Chiropractor’, will be a substantial field of 22 Veterans, 15 Juniors (a record entry for this event which is an encouraging trend) and 8 Women...
Amongst the Vets are some strong Competitors, which include such famous names as ex Grand Tour rider and man of a pedigree palmares Alan Peiper,... Alan, who agreed to ride and become a member of the Bec CC after losing a ‘Gentlemens’ bet to Beckett on who would win Olympic Gold i Australia or Great Britain in the team pursuit..Will be travelling across from Belgium to attend his ‘inaugural Hill Climb event’ , and will be cheering on his old mate Sean Yates in the morning who is also riding his first ever Hill Climb at the Catford CC’s event....
Other ‘first’s’ at riding the Bec Event, will be Ned Boulting, TV commentator for both cycling and football, and author of the book ‘How I won the Yellow Jumper’ and event organiser Beckett himself, who will be attempting to celebrate his 55th Birthday wearing number 55, by managing to haul his very unfit body up and past the timekeeper and has never ever, in all the years of being at White Lane ridden up it!!!
As always, the Bec event is not just about the ‘fast boys’ but it also retains a more social (and very noisy) element to its history... Riders such as Roy Instrall of the Morden CRC who has ridden this event for the past 27 years & vows to keep doing so as long as he can ride a bike.... The ladies of the Look Mum No Hands club, who are riding in aid of a charity dealing with breast Cancer.... and others who ride just to soak up the amazing atmosphere & noise that is amply supplied by the huge crowds of spectators or try to better previous years times.....
This year, Tony Gibb is back on the Mic by popular request, to whip up the crowd & supply race information over the PA system that lines most of the course...
And members & friends of the Bec CC will be working hard at the famous Bec ‘Teas in the trees’ tea stall to keep the hordes of enthusiastic supporters & riders fully fuelled with refreshments for their respective efforts...
All in all, we at the Bec are looking forward to another year of exciting competition & a great event.. And hope that you will all come and join us..... NOISY PARTICIPATION BY SPECTATORS IS COMPULSORY :)
