Over 100 riders entered the event, with 96 of those making it to the start line on what turned out to be a cool but dry Sunday afternoon. As such, the surface on White Lane was mainly dry and not too slippery for the riders thereby eliminating one of the favourite excuses for the finishers to use when reviewing their performance!

A total of 12 riders managed to cross the line inside of two minutes, which is seen as a significant marker for many on the 640 m long climb with an average gradient of 13%.

There was a new winner in the men’s competition with Chris Crabtree of Orwell Velo taking victory with a time of 1:49.3, placing him over two seconds ahead of second place Robbie White and third place rider Rowan Brackston, who repeated his podium finish of 2017. It’s worth noting that Robbie is still a junior so he’s certainly a name to look out for in the future.

Jacintha Hamilton-Love of Dulwich Paragon CC, who finished on last year’s podium, claimed top spot in the women’s race with a time of 2:44.0. Jennifer Andrews of CC Ashwell and Eleanor Bishop of Elite Cycling took second and third spot, respectively.

Nicholas Candy of North Road CC and James Gilmore of Preston Park Youth CC won the Junior and Juvenile competitions, respectively. The loudest cheers of the day are often reserved for the younger riders so we hope they all enjoyed the last push through the fan zone at the top of the climb.

Glyndwr Griffiths of 73 Degrees CC posted a very strong time to win the Vets competition in 1:53.0, while Rapha CC won the team prize with a combined time of 6:09.8. The three Rapha CC riders of Thomas Perren, Richard Applin and John Blight posted consistent performances, with times ranging from 2:01.6 to 2:04.5.

Thank you to our timekeepers Richard Blackmore and Mike Labram, and to Tony Gibb who once again provided superb commentary throughout the event to help entertain the crowds. I hope the atmosphere lived up to everybody’s expectations and look forward to seeing you all again next year for another afternoon of entertainment and top-class performances on White Lane.

All the best,

Keith Butler
